Each week, I plan on covering one character who means a lot to me, usually because they were influential on me in some way. This week, it's Mr. Dressup.

Think of him as the Canadian version of Mr. Rogers.

Name: Mr. Dressup
Played by: Ernie Coombs

If you were a child in Canada between 1967 and 1996, chances were that you watched Mr. Dressup on CBC every weekday morning. I certainly did, and he had quite the impact on me. Here was this kind old man, singing songs, playing games and dressing up in all sorts of costumes, all the while having a grand old time. He was just like a child despite being a grown up, and perhaps that's why I've never really let go of the kid inside of me. Mr. Dressup didn't, so why should I? While Ernie Coombs in no longer with us, I will remember him and his character forever... *sniffle*

Like Ash, but better.

Name: Ritchie (English)/Hiroshi (Japanese)
Age: Unknown, probably 10 or 11
Nationality: Kanto (Kantonian?)
Appears in: Pokemon
Voiced By: Tara Jayne (English), Minami Takayama (Japanese)

You've have to be an old fan of the Pokemon anime to remember Ritchie, because from what I can tell, he hasn't appeared since sometime during the Johto region. Perhaps that's for the best, since I always thought he was better than Ash any day. This kid took a Butterfree to the Pokemon League for crying out loud! Even with the fact that not all Pokemon fighting in the Pokemon League are fully evolved, that still takes guts. And skill. To me, Ritchie was a more competent version of Ash. He had pretty much the same Pokemon, but generally seemed smarter about how to be a Trainer and whatnot. Plus, he was a really great guy! Here's his momentous battle with Ash, in all of it's awesome glory (skip to 14:30):

Favourite Pairing(s): Ritchie/Ash, because come on, they're perfect for each other!
