It's the end of December, so time to look back on the year and what I've seen/read/played! I'm obviously doing anime this post, and for this list I'm counting anything that finished airing in 2017.
1. Digimon Appmon
2. Made in Abyss
3. The King's Avatar
4. Tales of Zesteria the X Season 2
Runner up: Recovery of an MMO Junkie
I didn't watch a ton of anime this year, and a lot what I did check out was crap (see upcoming list). So I had to struggle to come up with a meaningful list, and in a better year, Zesteria wouldn't have made the cut and Appmon would have be out since it started in 2016.
Appmon outranks Made in Abyss because it's a finished story while Abyss isn't, and frankly, I enjoyed Appmon more. Appmon is a great evolution of the Digimon franchise for our current technology and world, and although both Abyss has better worldbuilding, I like the characterization in Appmon better - it doesn't quite match Tamers, but it come damn close.
The King's Avatar was a nice surprise, since it's a Chinese production focusing on a competitive computer game. The animation is solid, and from what I've read of the
web novel, it's a good adaptation and I'm looking forward to season 2 in 2018.
Tales of Zesteria was a fun ride, and I'm glad I watched both seasons without having played the game (from what I hear, it actually surpasses the game in terms of giving some characters bigger roles). It's visually impressive as all ufotable productions are, but it definitely wasn't the best anime of the year for me.
MMO Junkie is my runner up since I haven't finished watching it yet, but I think I'd place it above Zesteria if I had finished it. Otherwise, I don't have a fifth anime since eldive and Dive weren't that great, and the two Digimon Tri films were just lackluster for me.
