Totally. Cool.
As some of you may be aware, the season finale of Once Upon a Time aired Sunday, and it took me a few days to get my thoughts in order about everything.
All in all, I enjoyed it. Lots of things happened, which was surprising, but everything fit together fairly nicely without too many plot holes (ok, I haven't found any yet, but I'm sure there's a few). That being said, I do have a few issues with the episode.
I suppose my biggest is how easily Emma went from non-believer to believer. It was only two episodes back that she was so convinced that the curse didn't exist that she couldn't see August's wooden leg, after all. I get that Henry collapsing like that would have shaken her, but it is a bit jarring how quickly everything clicked together and she linked it to magic. Which raises another minor point - how did she guess that Gold was the other one in town who knew about magic? I mean, she knew Jefferson knew about the curse, and she didn't know what happened to him after being kicked out of the window. Yes, Gold has been ~mysterious~ all season, but there was little reason for Emma to automatically point the finger at him. Unless I'm missing something obvious here...
Henry is another issue I have. I was waffling on whether or not I wanted him to be killed off throughout the entire episode, since, despite my feelings towards him at the start of the season, he did kinda grow on me. That being said, he reacted...very little to apparently dying and being revived with a kiss. And wasn't there a rule saying even magic couldn't bring back the dead? Unless the same loophole was used for him that allowed James=David to be alive in Storybrooke despite apparently dying in the Fairy Tale World. Perhaps limited immunity to death runs in the genes?
Onto the odd: The reunion between Gold and Belle was sweet, but rather odd, since I was expecting a kiss between them. A neat thing I noticed was that Belle didn't seem to have a name written on the door of her cell/room under the hospital. I'm assuming it was because Regina never planned on freeing her, hence no need for a fake name (but does she have fake memories?). And why exactly was Sydney locked up there/had a cell waiting for him? Isn't he supposed to be going to/in jail for kidnapping? Also, Gold seemed more evil in this episode than in others, which struck me as weird. It seems like he wants the best of both words - to live in the place where Bae went without the curse restricting him to Storybrooke, but still holding some/all of his magical power..which he had seemed willing to give up to find his son. I dunno, perhaps the magic is for a secondary motive?
The different fights of James and Emma versus dragon!Maleficent was pure awesomeness. I love the symmetry of James having to fight a dragon to protect someone dear to him (his mother and Snow, respectively), and it's clear that Emma inherited James' courage. Pity the sword got totalled, though. Jefferson was also a BAMF, and I can definitely see him siding with Emma next season, and perhaps seeking revenge for Regina breaking her promise. I am wondering how he knew about the Belle-Gold connection, though. I do hope he gets reunited with Grace quickly. It was wonderful to see Graham again, especially how he went behind Regina's back to help James escape. Finally, I'm eager to see what the writers will do with Dr. Whale next season - he's be present in the background this entire time, but we've gotten no hints on who his Fairy Tale persona is. And I seem to recall him looking pretty stunned after everyone got their memories back. You know what? I want reactions from everyone next season on how their adjusting to have two different sets of memories in their heads. And dealing with the apparent return of magic and all that entails.
